A striking vintage French ceramic pitcher by Accolay, dating from the 1960s.
The sculptural form features a generously rounded body, broad neck with a small pouring spout, and substantial loop handle. Its most distinctive feature is the richly textured red crackle glaze, contrasted by deep charcoal detailing and areas of mottled blue-grey and turquoise around the base and handle.
A dense network of dark crackling gives the surface remarkable depth, while the glaze changes subtly according to the light. The combination of warm red, graphite-like tones and cooler blue-green accents creates an unusually expressive surface and gives the piece considerable visual presence.
Beautiful from every angle, the pitcher works particularly well as a standalone sculptural object on a console, shelf or side table. Its organic form and painterly glaze make it especially suited to contemporary, eclectic and mid-century interiors.
Signed “Accolay” to the underside.
About Accolay
The Accolay pottery workshop was founded in Burgundy, France, in 1945 by André Boutaud, Louis Dangon, Slavik Paley and Raudé, following their training under ceramicist Alexandre Kostanda.
Working from the village of Accolay in the Yonne region, the group became known for experimental forms, unusual glazing techniques and highly individual handcrafted ceramics. In its early years, the workshop also produced ceramic jewellery and accessories associated with Christian Dior's post-war New Look collections.
Accolay ceramics have since become recognised examples of French mid-century studio pottery.
