Sculptural vintage stoneware basket produced by Les Potiers d’Accolay, France, circa 1960s.
This hand-formed basket features a generously sized asymmetrical body and a distinctive twisted handle, finished in a speckled grey glaze with brown and beige tonal variations. The organic form and restrained palette are characteristic of Accolay’s mid-century stoneware production, valued for its balance between functionality and sculptural presence.
The piece bears both an incised Accolay mark and the original “Les Potiers d’Accolay – Made in France” label, confirming its authenticity. Its substantial weight and expressive glazing make it well suited as a decorative centerpiece, fruit basket, or sculptural accent in a mid-century or contemporary interior.
About Accolay
The Accolay pottery workshop was founded in Burgundy, France, in 1945 by André Boutaud, Louis Dangon, Slavik Paley, and Raudé, following their training under ceramist Alexandre Kostanda. Established in a former factory in the village of Accolay (Yonne), the studio became known for its experimental, handcrafted ceramics. In its early years, Accolay also produced ceramic jewelry and accessories that were notably used by Christian Dior for his “New Look” collections, before gaining international recognition for its distinctive mid-century studio pottery.
