About Charles Schneider and the Schneider Glass Legacy
Charles Schneider (1881–1953) was a major French master glassmaker of the Art Deco period. Born in Château-Thierry, he trained in Nancy and later worked at Daum before founding his own glassworks with his brother Ernest Schneider. Together they established one of the most important French art glass ateliers of the early 20th century.
In 1913, the brothers founded the company Verreries Schneider in Épinay-sur-Seine. They produced under two principal signatures: “Schneider” and “Le Verre Français.” While “Le Verre Français” was typically used for cameo and acid-etched Art Deco glass with vibrant color overlays, works signed “Schneider” were often more sculptural and modernist in expression.
During the 1920s, their production gained international recognition and was exhibited at major decorative arts salons. Schneider became one of the defining names of French Art Deco glass, alongside Daum, Gallé, and Lalique. His work helped position French art glass as a luxury export category during the interwar period.
After Charles Schneider’s death in 1953, the Schneider name continued to influence French decorative glass production. Mid-century crystal forms reflect the enduring sculptural vocabulary associated with the Schneider workshop tradition.
