Original French Landscape Watercolor & Gouache by Kerfily (Jean-Louis Avril), Late 20th Century

A luminous French landscape by Kerfily (Jean-Louis Avril, 1948–2019), capturing the warmth and atmosphere of the Mediterranean countryside through expressive brushwork and a vibrant, harmonious palette.

A winding country path leads towards a cluster of whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs, nestled among trees and sunlit vegetation. Golden yellows, soft lavender, olive greens and vivid blues bring movement and depth to the composition, while delicate ink-like accents lend definition to the landscape.

Executed in watercolor and gouache on paper, the painting combines fluid, translucent washes with more opaque passages of colour, creating a wonderful interplay of light and texture.

The artwork is signed Kerfily in the lower-right corner and is presented in a dark wooden frame with a wide cream-coloured mount, protected under glass. On the reverse is an artist-signed certificate of authenticity, together with the original framing gallery's label from Clamart, France.

A characterful and generously proportioned original work, particularly suited to interiors that celebrate collected art, European landscapes and expressive colour.

About the Artist — Kerfily (Jean-Louis Avril, 1948–2019)
Kerfily, the artistic pseudonym of French painter and engraver Jean-Louis Avril (1948–2019), was born in Bonneval, in the Eure-et-Loir region of France.

After training in artistic photography, he developed his practice in painting, visual arts and printmaking, beginning his exhibition career in Paris in 1972.

Known particularly for his luminous interpretations of the French and Mediterranean landscape, Kerfily drew inspiration from Provence, the Luberon, Corsica, Brittany, Italy and the Greek islands. His distinctive approach emphasised expressive colour, energetic brushwork and the interplay of light and atmosphere.

His career extended beyond France, with exhibitions reported at museums in Bochum, Münster and Trier in Germany. From the 1980s onward, his paintings were exhibited through galleries in France and internationally, including in the United States, and entered private collections around the world.

His work is appreciated for its vibrant palette and ability to evoke the warmth and character of a place rather than simply reproduce its appearance.
