A monumental French Art Deco ceramic sculpture depicting a stag and doe with fawn, signed Ch. Lemanceau and dating to the 1930s. At 57.5 cm in width, this is a true large-scale statement piece — architecturally composed and conceived for prominent placement in refined interiors.

The composition exemplifies the French animalier tradition of the interwar period: elongated silhouettes, disciplined modeling, and controlled stylization. The vertical tension of the standing stag is balanced by the repose of the recumbent figures, creating a dynamic yet harmonious sculptural rhythm. The rich emerald glaze — characteristic of high-quality French Art Deco ceramics — enhances volume and depth while emphasizing the modernist contours.

About the Artist
Charles Lemanceau (1905–1980) was a French sculptor and ceramic artist associated with the golden age of French Art Deco decorative arts. He collaborated with important French manufacturers including Sainte-Radegonde, Saint-Clément, and Primavera (the art studio of the Paris department store Printemps). Lemanceau specialized in stylized animal sculptures that became emblematic of 1930s French decorative culture. Today, his signed works are collected internationally, particularly large-scale architectural compositions such as this example, which are significantly less common than smaller decorative models.

This piece embodies the sophistication of French 1930s design — a sculptural object conceived not merely as décor, but as an integrated work of decorative art aligned with the era’s architectural sensibility.

Condition
Very good vintage condition. Minor, age-appropriate surface nuances consistent with handcrafted ceramics of the period. There are small, discreet nicks to the tips of the stag’s ears, a tiny glaze loss on the fawn (visible in close-up), and two localized firing marks from the original production. These remain unobtrusive and do not detract from the overall presentation.
