A captivating late-19th-century French oil painting depicting a picturesque cluster of old stone houses, with warm terracotta rooftops, weathered façades and a charming exterior staircase.

Rich in architectural character, the composition captures the timeless atmosphere of rural France. The interplay of earthy ochres, muted greens and warm reddish tones creates a beautifully harmonious palette, while the substantial dimensions make this painting an inviting focal point for a living room, library or country house interior.

Painted by Jean-Georges Pasquet (1851–1936) during his formative years, after a composition by the French painter Émile Charles Dameron (1848–1908).

Dameron was an accomplished landscape painter who exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon and received recognition for his depictions of the French countryside. During the 1880s, Pasquet studied the work of established artists, producing hand-painted interpretations of their compositions as part of his artistic development.

This painting offers a fascinating glimpse into that tradition of artistic study and the exchange of influences between 19th-century French painters.

The work bears Pasquet's signature in the lower-right corner, accompanied by an inscription referencing Dameron. On the reverse, a handwritten annotation identifies the subject as Maison du Pont Cassé, Périgueux, with the date 1880.

The attribution to Jean-Georges Pasquet and the painting's relationship to Dameron have been confirmed through correspondence with a French gallery specializing in painters of the Périgord.

Presented in a substantial decorative frame, this original 19th-century oil painting combines historical interest with the warmth and character of traditional French interiors.
