A charming antique white bisque porcelain swan planter, distinguished by its gracefully curved neck, beautifully modelled feathers and dramatically raised wings.
The swan's sculptural form creates an open vessel between its wings, designed for use as a small jardinière, flower holder or decorative centrepiece. The finely detailed plumage and soft, matte white finish give the piece a romantic, almost theatrical quality.
Its design recalls the naturalistic ornamental ceramics associated with the 19th-century Napoleon III period. Believed to date from the late 19th or early 20th century, based on its design and comparable examples attributed to this period by specialist French antique dealers, the precise date and manufacturer remain unidentified.
The underside bears impressed markings, including what appears to be the number 1283 and a separate letter C.
A delightful decorative accent for a mantel, console, bookshelf or dining table, equally appealing displayed on its own or with a small arrangement of dried flowers.
Condition
Good overall antique condition, with a visible chip to the lower portion of the beak, as visible in the photographs. There are also minor surface marks, traces of accumulated soiling within the feather details and general wear consistent with age and use. The beak has been left unrestored. Please examine all photographs carefully.
