An evocative antique portrait print depicting a young woman in a pastoral setting, presented within an elegant circular composition and a distinctive black-and-gilt frame. Believed to date from around 1830, this charming piece captures the romantic sensibility of early 19th-century portraiture.
The finely detailed printed image is delicately enhanced with touches of muted pink and warm brown, bringing subtle colour to the sitter's floral bonnet and dress. Its circular presentation, surrounded by a broad black ground and gilded border, creates a particularly striking contrast.
The frame combines a simple black-painted wooden outer moulding with richly ornamented gilt detailing, giving the piece a decorative presence reminiscent of Regency and early Victorian interiors.
An old art dealer's label survives on the reverse, together with a handwritten inscription referring to an engraving dating to approximately 1830. Although the original artist and engraver have not been identified, these surviving details add to the historical character of the piece.
A beautifully atmospheric example of antique decorative portraiture, selected for its romantic subject, distinctive presentation and timeworn charm.
Condition
Antique condition with visible age-related wear. The print displays overall toning, scattered spotting and discoloration. The black surround shows surface marks and areas of finish loss, while the gilt ornamentation exhibits cracks, chips and several sections of missing decoration. The outer wooden frame shows rubbing and minor losses. The original paper backing is fragile, with tears and deterioration around the edges.
The original hanging arrangement is no longer secure, as one of the rear eye screws has become detached. The remaining eye screw will be removed before shipping to avoid placing pressure on the frame during transport. New hanging hardware will be required before display.
