A distinctive antique French terracotta walnut oil jug, traditionally known as a cruche, featuring a rounded body, warm honey-brown glaze, short pouring spout and four handles, including a prominent arched overhead handle.
Dating to approximately the late 19th or early 20th century, this rustic vessel was traditionally used for storing and pouring walnut oil, and is a beautiful example of French utilitarian folk pottery.
Provenance & A Shared History
Acquired from a private collection, this antique cruche previously belonged to a bourgeois household in France. The former owner fondly remembers seeing it in her grandmother's home since childhood, where it was displayed alongside a smaller antique cruche for many decades.
Having shared a place in the same family home for so long, the two vessels have become companions of sorts, carrying a special history together (see last photo).

Condition
In good antique condition overall, with characteristic surface wear and age-related crazing, primarily visible on the underside of the base. The spout has an old loss along its lower edge, reportedly present for many decades. No other cracks have been observed.
