An uncommon and rare antique French cruche de conscience, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. This traditional earthenware vessel features a beautiful golden-yellow glaze, a rounded body, four ceramic loops, and a substantial braided rope sling.
Originally used in southern France to collect donations of olive oil for the poor, these jugs were carried from farm to farm, often on the back of a donkey. Their name derives from the custom of leaving each donation to the conscience and generosity of the household. Rarely encountered today, particularly in such well-preserved condition, this example is a charming piece of French rural history and a distinctive decorative object.
Condition
Very good antique condition, with minor surface wear and natural glaze variations. Some chips and glaze loss around the lower foot and base. The braided rope shows natural wear.
