An unusual antique Arts & Crafts copper double pricket candlestick, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1930.
Entirely sculptural in form, the piece is constructed around a tall twisted copper stem rising from a broad tripod base. Two sweeping asymmetrical arms support large flower-shaped candle cups, each formed from individually shaped overlapping copper petals and fitted with a central pricket for securing a candle.
The construction is particularly appealing, with visible hand-worked surfaces, hammered and textured copper, riveted joints and traces of traditional soldered construction. The substantial tripod feet have softly rounded ends and retain the irregular tool marks characteristic of hand finishing.
Its asymmetric silhouette gives the candlestick an almost botanical quality, with the curling arms and flower-shaped candle cups appearing to grow from the twisted central stem. At 37.5 cm high and weighing approximately 1.5 kg, it has considerable presence and works equally well as a functional candleholder or as a sculptural decorative object.
The copper has developed a rich, naturally aged surface with warm brown and reddish tones alongside areas of blue-green verdigris. This patina has been intentionally preserved as part of the character and history of the piece.
No maker's mark has been identified. Its hand-worked copper, visible riveted construction, organic botanical forms and deliberately expressed craftsmanship are characteristic of the Arts & Crafts tradition, which emphasized natural materials and skilled hand production over industrial manufacture. Its raw metalwork and sculptural silhouette also evoke the aesthetic of later Brutalist design, making it equally appealing in traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition
Good antique condition with age-related wear throughout, including oxidation, surface marks, variations in the copper patina, areas of verdigris and traces of previous candle use. These are consistent with the age and handmade character of the piece and contribute to its distinctive surface. Please refer closely to the photographs for condition details.
