A captivating large-scale French Aubusson wool tapestry, “Jour & Nuit” (Day & Night), designed by Michèle Ray (born 1933) and produced by the celebrated Atelier Robert Four in Aubusson, France, circa 1970s.
This richly detailed composition brings together two contrasting worlds within a single panoramic tapestry, uniting the imagery of day and night through expressive bird motifs, stylised trees and intricate botanical forms. Its vibrant palette combines burnt orange, ochre, golden yellow, olive green, russet brown, cream and deep charcoal.
On the left, a magnificent bird, reminiscent of a phoenix, emerges within a radiant sun-like circular motif surrounded by flame-shaped forms. On the right, a distinctive blue owl perches among the branches against a dramatic dark background, introducing a striking contrast to the tapestry's predominantly warm palette.
The interplay between the luminous daytime scene and the darker nocturnal landscape beautifully evokes the passage between day and night. The two birds, one associated with radiant energy and the other with nocturnal stillness, lend the composition a poetic quality.
A Distinctive Combined Composition
Michèle Ray also explored the themes of day and night in separate tapestry designs, including works titled Diurne and Nocturne. What makes Jour & Nuit particularly compelling is the presentation of both contrasting worlds together in one expansive composition.
Measuring an impressive 240 cm (94.5 inches) wide, this large-format edition offers a remarkable panoramic interpretation of the artist's decorative language, creating a commanding visual presence in a living room, library, dining room or collected interior.
